Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Wednesday declared open the first edition of North East Olympic Games 2018 at Main Stadium Khuman Lampak Sports Complex, Imphal.
The Games is being organized by the MOA under the aegis of the North East Olympic Association.
Around 2000 thousand athletes will compete in 12 disciplines including Athletics, Archery, Badminton, Boxing, Football, Judo, Karate-Do, Shooting, Table Tennis, Taekwondo, Weightlifting and Wushu.
N Biren Singh, speaking at the inaugural event, said that it has been a long cherished dream of the region to create a platform to bring peace and friendship through sports.
“A lot needs to be done to optimally utilise and unlock the full potential of the talents in the region,” said Biren Singh.
Noting the achievements of Manipur and other North East states in sports, Biren Singh observed that it has increasingly become a career option for the young in the region.
The North East Olympic Games will provide valuable exposure and experience to young participants and inspire future sportspersons, he asserted.
The Manipur CM appealed to the people of the State to show their best hospitality and rich tradition and culture to the sportspersons who had come for the Games.
Manipur’s Education Minister and Chairman of Manipur Olympic Association Th. Radheshyam said that it is the humble beginning of the MOA to offer a common platform to come together, embarking upon a new journey to show the path of peace and harmony through the spirit of games and sports.
The Northeast Olympic Games will be a grooming ground for the young talents of the region, he said.
Over the next five days, 236 participants from Arunachal, 246 from Assam, 134 from Mizoram, 165 from Meghalaya, 224 from Nagaland, 128 from Tripura, 179 from Sikkim and 248 from Manipur will compete in the Games.
Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs, Government of Arunachal Pradesh Dr. Mohesh Chal Minister has also attended the Games opening alongside YAS Minister of Manipur Letpao Haokip, Minister for Health and Family Welfare L. Jayantakumar Singh, and others.
